Dental Sealants Prevent Cavities in Children

Dental Sealants have been used as a protective tool in dentistry since the 1960’s, due to their effective shielding abilities. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), nine out of ten cavities in school-aged children form in the deep pits and crevices of their teeth.

As such, a Dental Sealant aids in protecting the biting surfaces of the teeth and can help keep cavities from occurring. Sealing the teeth helps keep bacteria from adhering to the surface or down into the deep grooves of the teeth. This, in turn, prevents decay and makes the teeth easier to clean.

What Are Dental Sealants?

They are thin coatings made of a plastic material that is typically painted on in a liquid form. This liquid sealant is bonded to the teeth and forms a protective coating. Traditionally sealants are used on the permanent molars in the back of the mouth. However, they are now being used more regularly on other teeth, including non-molar baby and permanent teeth. The application of the sealant is simple, quick and painless and can usually be applied during a routine checkup or cleaning visit.

Dental Sealants are Safe for Children and Cost Effective!

By shielding the teeth from the bacteria that cause tooth decay, sealants are a safe preventative choice that can save your child from needing more comprehensive and costly restorative dental treatment in future.

Why Does My Child Need a Dental Sealant?

Since 80-90% of all cavities forms in school-aged children, they can be used to reduce the risk of the formation of most common cavities. Since the deep grooves and fissures of the teeth collect bacteria within the cracks and crevices, regular brushing is normally inadequate to reach these areas. This can become a serious oral health problem and lead to dental decay and periodontal disease.

Dental Sealants can significantly increase and protect your child’s dental health, which in turn promotes their overall health and well-being!
